Overview

The University of Roehampton (UoR) is a long established, yet modern academic community in south-west London with a growing global reputation due to the high standard of its teaching and research.

　　Location is one of UoR's key assets. The university campus is nestled within 54 acres of landscaped parkland. Tree-lined avenues and open green spaces connect the facilities of this 180-year-old educational institution, yet students are only 30 minutes from central London by public transport. It really does give the best of both worlds the community atmosphere of a traditional campus university, with the proximity to one of the most dynamic cities in the world.

　　The university campus contains all the facilities needed for students to succeed, while also providing a safe and social place to live and work. Historic buildings sit alongside cutting-edge facilities. Lecture halls and computer laboratories sit beside dance and theatre venues, and sports facilities including a fully equipped gym which is available to all students. The university provides a wide range of indoor and outdoor social spaces, catering options, on-campus bars and various non-alcoholic spaces. The UoR Students' Union hosts live music events, weekly markets and club nights to service the university's social scene.

　　Students can apply for over one hundred different degree courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, as well as a number of doctorate study programs and research positions. What's new

UoR is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all its students, and has prepared a detailed and thorough plan to ensure that students may continue with their studies as smoothly as possible in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

　　UoR intends to continue to provide on-campus, in-person teaching throughout 2022, and will implement any changes based on government guidance as needed. At the same time, the university have many measures in place to ensure and protect the health and wellbeing of the community.

Teaching quality

UoR holds an outstanding reputation for its teaching and mentorship quality, which forms the backbone of its strength in research, on both a domestic and global level.

　　In the last Research Excellence Framework assessment, UoR was ranked the most research-intensive modern university in the UK. As a university with such a long and progressive tradition of teaching, UoR is consistently working to improve the educational service and learning opportunities which it provides to its students and staff, and there are a number of measures in place to ensure the exceptional quality of the teaching.

　　The academic staff work at the cutting edge of their subjects, and their teaching is informed by the very latest knowledge and discourse.

　　UoR has formed the Learning, Teaching and Quality Group, an internal committee who meet twice per semester and who conduct internal module evaluations to ensure that teaching methods are scrutinised each year, adjusted as required to remain educationally relevant and to suit its students' needs.

　　

Graduate outcomes

The high standard of teaching at UoR, combined with its research focused academic structure makes graduating students extremely employable. 94 per cent of UoR undergraduate students are employed or have moved on to further study within six months of graduation, and they also earn above the national average in their new employment roles.

　　The university has a year-round career support team who are dedicated to assisting and advising students on their decisions beyond university. The team provides free personal careers assessments, a mentoring program, CV advice and interview training, as well as running workshops and events throughout the year which connect current students with UoR's extensive network of alumni and professional contacts. Many of these connections result in work placements, internships and employment opportunities after graduation.

　　The university's employment portal, CareerLink, is an online resource available to all current students and graduates which offers as much of the career team's services as possible in an online format, accessible from anywhere in the world.

Entry requirements

The university uses the UCAS Tariff as a comparison tool when considering applicants for undergraduate programmes with varying qualifications, which also allows UoR to assess prospective students who are applying with a range of different qualifications.

　　Entry requirements generally vary on a course-by-course basis, and specific degree programme information may be found on the university website. The university maintains a set of general entrance requirements for all undergraduate courses, which are as follows:

　　Passes in two distinct subjects at GCE Advanced Level

　　A pass in one subject at GCE Advanced Level plus (a) passes in two distinct subjects at GCE Advanced Subsidiary Level, or (b) a Vocational A-Level Single Award, or (c) two Vocational A-Level part Awards

　　A Vocational A-Level Double Award or

　　A Vocational A-Level Single Award plus (a) two Vocational A-Level part Awards, or (b) passes in two distinct subjects at GCE Advanced Subsidiary Level or

　　A BTEC National Certificate or Diploma or

　　A Scottish Certificate of Education with (a) passes in five subjects, including at least three at Higher grade, or (b) passes in four subjects all at Higher grade or New Higher grade or

　　The full Diploma of the International Baccalaureate or

　　An Irish Leaving Certificate with passes in four subjects at Grade C at the Higher level.

　　Certain courses require a GCSE grade C or above in specific subjects, such as key skill areas like maths and English. International applicants must also demonstrate a degree of spoken English language proficiency before starting their chosen course, and the university website provides a list of equivalents to the following IELTS standards.

　　Undergraduate degrees – 6.0 overall with a minimum 5.5 in each component.

　　Postgraduate degrees – 6.5 overall with a minimum 5.5 in each component.

　　Research degrees – 7.0 overall with a minimum 6.5 in each component.

　　

Facilities

The facilities available to students on the UoR campus are comprehensive and well established. New students will belong to one of the university's four colleges: Digby Stuart, Southlands, Froebel and Whitelands. Whitelands College is the oldest of the four, and has been providing higher education for women longer than any university in the UK. This rich history demonstrates UoR's values, and attitude towards inclusion and education for all. These colleges are the nucleus of the university's organised social and sporting activities, and provide a home community for each student within the university where they may get to know their peers and tutors more closely, and outside the context of the classroom.

　　There are many accommodation options on campus, including some of the best value options in London. These range from high-end rooms with en-suite facilities, to more affordable options with shared bathroom facilities. There is something to suit everyone at UoR.

　　The university campus includes an award-winning library, with over 350,000 books, eBooks and resources, as well as spaces for individual study and group work. There is a fully equipped sports and fitness centre on site, outdoor courts and top of the line dance studios to ensure that students have every opportunity to stay active and learn new skills beyond their course of study.

　　

Fees & funding

The cost of going to university can be significant, especially in London which is one of the most expensive cities to live. UoR understands this, and offers an extremely wide range of financial support options for new and current students.

　　There are merit-based scholarships available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels for both UK/EU and international students, whose criteria range from academic excellence to musical or sporting talent. There is now a scholarship which recognises exceptional performance in esports.

　　These merit-based scholarships range from GBP 1,000 to GBP 4,000 and are applied over the course of three years. There are also discounts for alumni referrals, and for postgraduate students who already hold a degree from UoR.

　　Beyond this, there is a multitude of other financial support options offered by the university UoR has a Student Hardship Fund for those in difficult financial circumstances and offer free advice and support on personal finances and budgeting for all students.
