Solent has been a university since July 2005, but it has a long and complex educational history. Incorporated as an independent higher education institution in 1989, the University's origins can be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1855. Mergers between Southampton College of Art, the College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash laid the foundations for what is now Solent University. Today, the university has a diverse student body of students from all over the world, studying a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses across Business, Law and Digital Technologies, Creative Industries, Architecture and Engineering, Maritime and Technology, Health, Psychology and Social Care, Sport, Health and Social Sciences, and Warsash School of Maritime Science and Engineering.
Solent University offers a wide range of degree programs, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, foundation degrees, and professional courses. To this end, many of its courses include work-based learning and professional placements, as well as opportunities to participate in real-world projects and industry collaborations. Solent University has a diverse and inclusive community of international students, with over 100 different nationalities represented on campus. International students make up a significant proportion of the student body, and the university is committed to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.
