About the course
The Department of Computer Science offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science in Computer Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Admission to these programs is highly competitive and based upon academic record, and letters of recommendation. It is strongly suggested that applicants present evidence of mathematical maturity as well as competence in computer science. Full details of the requirements for degree programs are available from the department upon request. All candidates in the M.S. program are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the fundamental areas of computer science by taking four core courses in specific areas. Both thesis (Plan A) and non-thesis (Plan B) options are available in the program leading to the Master of Science degree. A project is required of non-thesis candidates. How to apply
Entry requirements for University of Kentucky
We expect graduate students entering our degree programs to demonstrate knowledge of computing, competency in scientific applications and mathematical maturity. You can demonstrate computing knowledge by extensive experience in the use of high-level programming languages and acquaintance with assembly language. We anticipate that you will have studied data structures and possess knowledge of computing systems, numerical methods and theoretical computer science. You can demonstrate competency in scientific applications in a variety of ways. Experience in applied mathematics, engineering or any of the sciences is usually sufficient. We provide several remedial courses for graduate students who lack some of this background. Often students with a background in mathematics or engineering instead of computer science spend a portion of their first two semesters taking these courses. You must provide transcripts from all post-secondary institutions at which you have taken courses, whether you received a degree or not, If you are an international student, The Graduate School requires a signed and documented financial certificate. When you get a letter of acceptance, you should submit this certificate to The Graduate School following the instructions in the letter. Do not send these materials to the Department of Computer Science, All applications must include current GRE scores (within five years). Include the Statement of Purpose, a brief essay explaining why you wish to pursue graduate studies in computer science, Arrange for at least three letters of recommendation , An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduatework is required by the Graduate School. Individual departments may require higher gradepoint averages. International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. The University of Kentucky requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based). For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required.
