About the course
The MFA Technical Production program at Florida State University provides students with skills necessary to succeed as a technical manager. Students gain essential skills and knowledge of technical theatre through academic and practical experience. A wide array of courses provides many paths towards specialized interests such as production management or stage machinery design. Courses include training of computer aided drafting, structural analysis, physics of stage machinery, electronics, mechanical design, technical and production management, show control, safety, and more. Through production work students have many opportunities to serve in leadership roles such as Assistant Technical Director, Technical Director, or in production management. Here they hone their skills in communication, scheduling, material and labor budgeting, and project supervision. They also are able to master such areas as welding, carpentry, hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, technical design, and computer applications with hands-on experience. How to apply
Entry requirements for Florida State University
A Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre from an accredited college or university. (Students who do not hold a Theatre degree must show evidence of substantial course work and/or experience in theatre to indicate probability of achieving success in advanced theatre studies)
A grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) during the last two years of study for a bachelor’s degree or of 3.0 on a masters degree from an accredited university, OR an acceptable score on the combined verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examination taken within the last 5 years
Specific approval of the faculty and program director within the School of Theatre
Applicants must submit a completed School of Theatre graduate application and supporting materials.
Internet based TOEFL (IBTOEFL): 80, Paper based TOEFL (TOEFL): 550, International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5.
