Our MA explores the critical role of urban design and planning in solving global challenges and includes opportunities to engage in design and development issues faced across the Global South and Global North.
The course will equip you with specialist knowledge, awareness and understanding of the relationship between design and planning in contemporary cities. You'll learn from and engage with academic staff across the department who are at the forefront of their fields internationally, alongside leading practitioners.
Your career
The MA will equip you for professional practice in urban design and planning in the UK and internationally. Past graduates have been well placed for jobs globally, particularly in East Asia and India as well as more locally across the UK. Further study for a PhD in our leading centre for doctoral training and research is another common route for our graduates.

The entry requirement to the programme is a first undergraduate degree or other equivalent qualification related to planning, and/or design in the built environment including architecture, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and urban planning. Students with a degree from a non built environment related course but who have a keen interest in planning and urban design, a commitment to work in the built environment field and strong academic credentials will also be considered. We also welcome applications from those who have significant professional experience in the fields of planning, urban design or development.
Overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (IBT) - Overall score of 88 or above, with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
