About the course

Develop your own distinctive design practice by exploring the processes and methodologies of architecture. You'll study in a studio and have the opportunity to work on real-life projects with local and regional groups.

　　This studio-based course will help you develop your own distinctive design practice. You’ll explore design processes and methodologies. There are opportunities to work on real-life projects with local, regional and international groups as part of our Live Projects initiative. You can take the course as a stand-alone MA or as preparation for a PhD via our PhD by Design programme.

　　You'll investigate architectural themes in depth, working ly with your studio tutor. The aim is to consider design within the context of rigorous and innovative research. You'll specialise in the theory and practice of design and develop the skills and knowledge to be a creative and original architect.

How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Sheffield

A first undergraduate degree (2.1 or above) or other equivalent qualification related to design in the built environment.

　　Related subjects include: Design, architecture, art, computing, engineering, social sciences and education or any other discipline that has a demonstrable relationship to some aspect of architectural design and/or research.

　　We also welcome applications from individuals without a degree in these areas, but with significant practical experience in a design-related field or with significant experience of research. Applicants in this instance are judged on the relevance of previous work experience, and on their art, design or research work. We expect some expertise in technologies used to conduct and present research. If you intend to produce practice as research we require skills in the equipment used to produce design work (IT and/or manufacture workshop skills).

　　IELTS (or an equivalent) with a score of 6.5 (with no component less than 6.0).

　　Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test (IBT) - Overall score of 88 or above, with at least 17 in Listening, 17 in Writing, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking.
