About the course

Merge your interests in a program of study that hones your skills of artistic expression. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with an emphasis in Photography, Video and Imaging encourages students to conduct a rigorous investigation into the nature and meaning of photographic representation and its role in contemporary culture. Students demonstrate commitment to expressive inquiry, develop maturity of vision and take responsibility for their professional development as artists. The program offers a progressive approach to the practice of photography, asking students to question and expand the boundaries of the medium. Students take courses in traditional black-and-white darkroom techniques, digital and other image-forming technologies, color processes, large-scale photography, video and performance.

　　Context, Students will demonstrate an in-depth comprehension of art history, contemporary practice, and theory?understanding how they inform and influence their artistic practice.

　　Concept, Students will develop a portfolio that demonstrates the ability to utilize critical inquiry and research to develop meaningful and innovative content in their work.

　　Process, Students will develop a portfolio that demonstrates facility with, and command of their chosen tools and materials as well as the formal properties that underlie their use. They will also demonstrate an understanding of how concept informs choices with respect to tools and materials.

　　Integration, Students will demonstrate the emergence of a personal voice and visual style/approach in their work.

　　Prospective first-year students must:

　　Have a 3.00 recalculated grade point average (GPA) (a B or better where A=4.00) from a secondary school. Please note: GPA recalculation occurs during the admissions evaluation process and is based on grades from courses outlined in our competency requirements below.

　　Have three years of high school work. Please note: If you are currently in high school, UA needs to see 9–11 grade work. If you have completed high school then UA needs to see 10–12 grade work.
