About the course
The Urban and Regional Planning major provides an integrated perspective on towns and cities, and how to promote more efficient and sustainable development. Students learn to interpret urban contexts, analyze the nature and scope of social and environmental problems, and apply planning concepts and techniques through collaborative problem solving. The major prepares students with broad knowledge and specialized skills for diverse careers in public service, consulting, and development. In this program, you?ll learn to interpret urban contexts, analyze the scope of social and environmental problems, and apply urban planning concepts and techniques while collaborating with agencies and developers. You?ll learn both the broad knowledge and specialized skills for careers in public service, consulting, and development. This major is interdisciplinary. Administered by the Department of Geography, it also includes courses from architecture, economics/business, political science, sociology, statistics, and sustainability. Many planners work in city or county government, helping communities plan for the future and develop according to that vision. They work with elected and appointed officials and the public to identify community goals, research existing conditions and best practices, and design solutions. Planners also help develop and administer regulations to guide efficient, socially equitable, and sustainable development. Our graduates make a difference in communities across the U.S. and beyond.
