BA (Hons) Interior Design

About the course

This interior design course at Northumbria focuses on designing innovative interiors within new architecture and via the adaptive re-use of existing buildings and their exterior presence. Design projects will be set in the context of existing architecture or new build sites, covering all aspects of the interiors industry. Projects will cover a diverse range of commercial interiors that include, Leisure (bars, restaurants and nightclubs), Hospitality (hotels), Retail, Exhibition/event design, Workplace, Museums, Public Spaces and Theatre and TV set. You will explore complex architectural intervention down to the finer detail of commercial interior design. Exciting design proposals will develop through the study of design history and theory and be explored via investigations into existing site and architecture, function, materials, brand, tactility, space, form and human interaction. All projects are set in the context of industrial practice and communicated through 2D and 3D methods, including technical drawings, 3d visualisation, sketching and model-making. Our unique collaborative relationships with national and international clients and practices allow you to work on real life project briefs with companies such as Topshop, Gensler, John Lewis, Live Theatre, Fuse and Dalziel and Pow. In addition, we were invited to participate in the prestigious Open Studios Programme at The Bauhaus, Dessau with our final year students.

The Interior Design course is designed to support the development of your intellectual, practical and transferable skills to prepare you for employment upon graduation or further study. You will graduate as highly employable industry-ready professionals, able to confidently offer solutions to complex and challenging interior design briefs. You will be able to demonstrate entrepreneurial capabilities and resourcefulness in the application of processes, aesthetics, function and materials. Our Interior Design degree graduates work as interior designers for leading design companies and architectural practices across the UK and abroad, such as Foster and Partners, Met Studio, Dalziel and Pow, Gensler, Paul Smith, Imagination and Zebra.
