A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck just offshore near Temuco, Chile today (Sunday) at 3:20 pm ET.
There were no initial reports of serious damage or deaths. No significant tsunamis are expected.
"A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast," according to a statement from the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. "NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas."
An aftershock of magnitude 5.0 was also reported.
A major earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck the coast of Chile last February, moving the city of Concepción at least 10 feet (3 meters) to the west and causing heavy damage
Separately, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Argentina Saturday.
