About Engineering

Engineering is a discipline dedicated to problem solving. Our built environment and infrastructure, the devices we use to communicate, the processes that manufacture our medicines, have all been designed, assembled or managed by an engineer. From satellites to transistors, engineers use mathematics and science to achieve extraordinary feats and find solutions to some of the world's most complex challenges.

A degree in Engineering provides students with the fundamental engineering training they need to begin exciting careers. With an extensive variety of engineering specialties available, including Aerospace, Biomedical, Environmental and Technology, engineering students have the opportunity to choose from an array of fields to find the perfect niche.

A degree in Engineering prepares students for work as professional engineers and computer scientists. Along with concentrated study in their chosen specialisation, undergraduate Engineering students can expect to take course work in Mathematics, Physical and Life Sciences, and General Engineering.

Is Engineering right for me?

Engineers must have a knack for numbers and an aptitude for science. They apply their talents to help create everything ranging from airports and ships to light emitting diodes and zippers.

Engineering degrees are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of the rudiments of Engineering, setting the base for you to specialise in a particular niche such as Industrial Engineering or Marine Engineering. You will be taught using a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, lab sessions and independent study that create an optimum learning environment.

Study options and costs

From diploma-level study to university degrees, there are so many ways to begin your journey as an engineer.

A Bachelor of Engineering degree prepares students for professional careers in Engineering, which are in demand year-round. Students earning a Bachelor' of Engineering degree focus on coursework that is specialised in the sector that the student is interested in, such as materials engineering, robotics engineering, biochemical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, thermodynamics, and sustainable design, among the many options. A Bachelor of Engineering serves as a solid starting point for a successful career in Engineering. The time required for the completion of a bachelor's in Engineering is 4 years and the annual tuition fee is around $18,885.

A master's in Engineering is often pursued as a bridge between an undergraduate degree and doctoral studies. The focus of this programme is usually on the academic side of Engineering, with a selection of courses covering Civil Engineering, Plastics, Software Engineering or Environmental Engineering. Classes may vary greatly depending on the specific engineering focus of the programme, such as Civil, Computer, Mechanical, or Nuclear. However, courses tend to require proficiency in Calculus and physical sciences and may include hands-on projects or theoretical dissertations. The duration of this programme is 2 years and the annual tuition fee on average is $21,482.

Future outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment growth for engineers, with nearly 140,000 new jobs expected for engineers over the 2016–26 decade. The job outlook for engineers is promising as per the BLS. In the coming decade, however, it is predicted that increasing employment of engineers in research and development and consulting services industries should generate the most growth. As companies lean toward more sustainable practices and products, engineers will be needed to improve and update product designs, help increase productivity and employ new technologies.

Engineering offers a fulfilling career track with lucrative employment opportunities. The majority of educational think-tanks, blogs and news portals rate engineering as one of the top-paid degree programs. Engineering programmes take up almost 40% of the slots in the top 10 paying majors’ lists. In fact, engineers have an average annual salary of $91,010, more than twice the average annual salary for all other professions!

Career pathways for Engineering graduates

Industrial Engineer

An industrial engineer is responsible for designing facilities, systems and equipment, and ensuring that they are operating at maximum efficiency. They aim to improve product quality and lower production costs. The average annual salary of industrial engineers is $74,819.

Biomedical Engineer

A biomedical engineer creates medical devices. They work closely with healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, therapists and researchers to understand what demands these devices will undergo and design them accordingly. The medical devices they design include diagnostic imaging technology, implants, prosthetics, monitoring systems and surgical techniques. The average annual salary of a biomedical engineer is $74,850.

Civil Engineer

A civil engineer is responsible for designing, building and testing large infrastructure projects. These may include highways, bridges, tunnels, railroads and other major public construction projects. The average annual salary of a civil engineer is $83,670.

Computer Engineer

A computer engineer uses coding and programming skills to design computer software, hardware, systems and networks. They ensure that physical computer hardware and software can work in unison. They may specialise in certain areas such as Virtual Reality, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, operating systems and mobile apps. The average annual salary of a computer engineer is $86,129.

Aerospace Engineer

An aerospace engineer specialises in designing, building and testing aircraft such as airplanes, helicopters, drones, satellites, rockets and military missiles. Much of their work includes developing new technologies to use for aircraft and spacecraft. The average annual salary of an aerospace engineer is $101,617.
