The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is a nationally ranked public research university located in a beautiful riverside location in Lowell, Massachusetts.

What's new

There are multiple new groundbreaking research initiatives underway at UMass Lowell, led by faculty and students and supported by grant funding. The university's robust research engagements provide students with hands-on experience with innovative work in robotics, biotechnology, cybersecurity, clean energy and more. Recent research highlights include:

　　A USD 2.3 million award to improve CT scan images. Designing and building prosthetic devices for children. Developing bioartificial tissues to improve life for people with diabetes. Collaboration with an Army Solider Center to create solar-powered textiles. Criminal Justice Prof. Arie Perliger is exploring the social impact of extreme climate events in several Massachusetts communities. Teaching quality

More than 1,000 of UMass Lowell's faculty members are researchers and scholars in their fields, and their ongoing work contributes to the research output of the university. Annual research expenditures at the University of Massachusetts Lowell total USD 111 million, which supports a diversity of research centers and expands the horizons of academic knowledge and sustainable practices.

Department structure

The University of Massachusetts Lowell offers more than 170 fully accredited academic courses, spanning many different levels of study, and delivered through five academic colleges and its Honors College. More than half of the university's on-campus courses meet STEM eligibility requirements.

　　

Manning School of Business

This school has a long history of educating business leaders, and includes courses in accounting, finance, management, marketing, innovation, and information systems. It is AACSB accredited, a designation only achieved by 5 percent of all business schools worldwide.

　　

Francis College of Engineering

Entry requirements

Entry requirements to UMass Lowell vary by level of study, by school and in some cases by degree program. Students are encouraged to learn more by checking the undergraduate application requirements or graduate application requirements on the university's website.

　　All international applicants to undergraduate programs are required to provide proof of English language proficiency, except citizens from countries where English is commonly spoken: Australia, Canada (except Quebec), United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Guyana and English-speaking countries of Africa and the West Indies.

Transferring Credits from an International Institution

To transfer undergraduate credits, students must provide course descriptions, translated into English, and notarized to ensure authenticity. Course descriptions must match what is on the institution's website or in their course catalog. Individual departments review and determine whether credits can be accepted.

　　In addition, all transcripts must be evaluated by an outside agency such as World Education Services (WES) or the Center for Educational Documentation, Inc.

　　All undergraduate applicants are considered for scholarships awards are based on the academic profile of the applicant and the strength of the applicant pool. Last year the university allocated more than USD 186 million in financial support to the student community. Prospective students are encouraged to check their eligibility to receive financial awards. Undergraduate applications for financial support are submitted online, while graduate applicants are automatically considered for financial support upon completion and review of their application.

　　

Campus facilities

UMass Lowell's 130-acre campus, located 25 miles northwest of Boston, is the second largest in the University of Massachusetts system. It contains everything students need to achieve their academic goals, while developing themselves personally and enjoying a memorable university experience.

　　Students live on campus in 10 fully modernized residence halls, which are located within minutes of university teaching facilities. Campus housing includes suites, apartment-style living and living-learning communities. Ample off-campus housing options are also available. The Office of Residence Life assists with finding housing options for the university's postgraduate students.

　　The campus has a large selection of amenities ranging from libraries, laboratories and seminar rooms to food and drink vendors, coffee shops, fitness centers and recreational facilities.
