About the course

To complete a postgraduate research programme, you’ll need to be dedicated and passionate about your area of study. But it’ll be well worth it. Being a doctoral student is challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. You are expected to carry out a programme of research in a particular area under the supervision of a primary supervisor and one or more co-supervisors. We investigate the physics of soft matter systems – materials that include liquid crystals, polymers and biopolymers, glasses, composites, gels and colloids. Our work is primarily experimental, we explore fundamental properties of soft materials and link our discoveries to applications and devices. Recent highlights include: the discovery of a synthetic molecular auxetic material (its thickness increases when strained), producing lightweight, strong, single component composites from sustainable resources, and finding gel solutions for Li batteries. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Leeds

You must have achieved a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons), or equivalent, or a good performance in a Masters level course in a relevant subject. We also recognise relevant industrial and academic experience. IELTS - an overall band of 6.0 with no individual skill band below 5.5 in all components iBT TOEFL - (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 87 overall with Listening 20, Reading 20, Speaking 22, Writing 21.
