About the course

A large majority of those beginning postgraduate study in Durham (typically around 30 - 35 per year) intend to work for a Ph.D. degree, which normally requires between 36 and 48 months of full-time study depending on the programme. The degree is awarded on the basis of the presentation and oral examination of a thesis. Quarterly and annual monitoring of progress combined with a Staff-Student on-line blog system for regular meeting recording ensures satisfactory performance prior to progression to the next year of study. How to apply

Entry requirements for Durham University

For entry onto a postgraduate research degree, Durham typically

requires you to hold a bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree with a

significant research component. In addition to having these academic

qualifications, you will also need to write a research proposal about

the project you wish to pursue, and identify an academic supervisor

you will work with for the duration of your degree.

We recommend that you contact and confirm your academic

  supervisor, before submitting your application.

We welcome applications from motivated and enthusiastic students who have demonstrated excellent research potential.

IELTS: an overall score of 6.5 with no individual component under 6.0, or

TOEFL iBT (non-Tier 4 visa applicants only): scores of at least 92 (with no component under 23)
