About the course

Humber’s Introduction to Commercial Jazz Music certificate program is a performance-based program designed to help you develop the skills and knowledge required to continue your postsecondary education in music. Students will further develop performance skills and identify and improve upon areas of weakness. All courses have a particular focus on the commercial/jazz field.

　　You will emerge from the program with a clearer understanding of the field and your own career potential within it, and as a stronger candidate for entry into diploma/degree programs at Canadian colleges and universities.

　　This intensive, performance-based program provides a comprehensive and integrated curriculum designed for the talented player who wants to solidify his or her knowledge of the fundamentals of western music and/or further his or her current performance skills. You will be challenged to develop and further your performance skills through the jazz-specific areas of improvisation, repertoire development and small group ensemble performance.

　　Driven by performance, Introduction to Commercial Jazz Music is an intensive eight-month program that uses jazz as a framework to help you assess and fortify the skills required for success in a music career. By focusing on the key areas of repertoire, small group performance and improvisation, you will clarify your perspective and develop a personal framework that will nurture your ongoing musical development. How to apply

Entry requirements for Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses: Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent). Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 for paper-based test or 80 (20L, 20W, 20S, 20R) for internet-based test or IELTS with an overall 6.0 andNo band below 5.5.
