About the course

Our MSc in TESOL Education is for graduates with no or minimal experience of teaching English. Based in the School of Education, this Master's degree links English language teaching to wider issues of education.

　　The MSc TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) degree in the University of Birmingham provides a solid grounding in practical language teaching skills, and in language learning and teaching research. You will create bespoke teaching and learning materials, and will also develop strong grounding in the latest cutting-edge developments in language learning and teaching.

How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Birmingham

We usually require an upper second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, English Language or another relevant subject (e.g. Translation Studies, TEFL/TESL/TESOL, English Literature, Communication Studies). Appropriate work experience will also be taken into consideration IELTS 6.5 in all bands, TOEFL 88 overall with 22 in each band, University of Birmingham graduates do not need to provide transcripts or copies of degree certificates, however we advise applicants who graduated prior to 2000 to provide copies of their qualifications as they may take longer to verify. Personal statement, approximately 5000 characters, explaining why you are interested in studying on your chosen programme. This can be uploaded to the personal statement section in PDF or Microsoft Word format. Alternatively, you can type this within the application portal. On your application, you will be asked to supply contact details of two academic referees (or one academic reference if applicable to the course/programme appled for). Employment references may be acceptable for certain courses which require them.
