About the course

The Master of Translation Studies is designed to further develop your skills in translation between English and another language. You will learn theories and practical strategies that are essential to achieve high quality translations and applicable in a wide range of workplaces.

  The Master of Translation Studies will equip you with advanced knowledge and skills in both the theory and practice of translation. The program includes a focus on human evaluation of machine translation and will provide opportunities to participate in machine translation-related research projects with industry partners. Throughout the degree, you will explore the foundations of language structure and how communicative practices are expressed in and through languages. As a part of this program, you will also undertake a translation project under the supervision of a specialist staff member, giving you first-hand experience within your degree. Entry requirements for The University of Newcastle

Bachelor Honours degree in a relevant discipline area

  OR

  Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline area with at least 1 year of relevant work experienceOR

  Bachelor degree with a major in a relevant discipline area with at least 1 year of relevant work experienceOR

  Graduate Certificate in a relevant discipline area

  OR

  Graduate Diploma in a relevant discipline area

  Relevant discipline areas include linguistics and Modern Languages (e.g. French, German, Japanese, Chinese, Scandinavian languages) and Ancient/Classical Languages (Latin, Ancient Greek).

  For non-anglophone international students, relevant discipline areas include English.

  Relevant work experience may include paid or unpaid/volunteer research, teaching, and assisting teaching in the field of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), foreign language teaching and pedagogy, translation and interpretation.

  Work experience can be identified through: certified copies of all relevant qualifications, detailed CV, and a statement of service or signed letters from employers confirming your role, duties and period of employment.

  All Applicants must:

  have an IELTS overall score of at least 6.5 and reading/writing (R, W) scores of at least 6.5 or equivalent in other tests,

  have an advanced level in a second language in reading and writing corresponding to the Level B2/C1 in the Common European Framework (or equivalent)

  For non native speakers of the language other than English, this proficiency can be demonstrated by scores in internationally recognised tests (like level 6 in HSK for Chinese, DALF for French, etc.) TOEFL IBT 79 R: 19 L: 20 S: 20 Writing 24
