About the course
The mission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Howard University is to strive for a recognized level of national and international excellence in research and teaching in physics and to assure that students of African American descent and other underrepresented groups are given the opportunity to achieve their fullest potential in physics. The Department first offered the Master of Science degree in the early 1930's and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in the early 1960's. The goals of the Department at the graduate level include: 1.Being the largest producer in the country of African American physicists at the doctoral level, and 2.Being the premiere program of its size in the country within a few selected areas of physics. How to apply
Entry requirements for Howard University
A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred, and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in major course work is required. Each graduate department may have additional ?special admission requirements? which are noted on this page.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) a score of 90 on the Internet base (IBT) is required for applicants whose native language is not English. Official TOEFL scores must be sent directly from ETS. The TOEFL test is only waived if the applicant has received a degree in the U.S. In lieu of the TOEFL (if not offered in your country), applicants may submit results from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with an overall score of a 6.5.
