Master of Science in Human Development and Family Science

About the course

The goal of the department (HDFS) is to provide an educational experience that promotes the integration of knowledge and professional practice from the fields of child/youth development and family studies. Our objectives are to prepare researchers and scholars to generate knowledge about individual and family development and behavior over the life span, as well as educate professionals who will provide educational, implementation, and advocacy services needed for children and families to function more effectively. These objectives are consistent with the goals of the University of Georgia, particularly with regard to its land grant mission of fostering research and its application to enhance the quality of life for all individuals.

Master of Science: Students may choose one of two approaches to this degree. One is intended for those who plan to continue their education through the Ph.D. degree. The other is for those who plan professional employment upon the completion of the master’s degree. The minimum requirement for the M.S. degree is an acceptable thesis and a program of study consisting of 36 semester credit hours. The primary difference in these programs of study is that the “pre-Ph.D.” approach does not include an internship and the “professional” approach does.
