Master of Science in Geology - Surface Processes

About the course

Earth?s surface is constantly being shaped by flows of wind, water and ice. Geomorphology is the scientific study of earth surface processes, including the erosion, deposition and formation of landforms and sediments. The surface processes group at NAU conducts fundamental and applied geomorphological research in desert, mountain, hillslope, river, coastal, and estuarine environments. We use a combination of field surveys, remote sensing, laboratory analyses, and numerical modeling to studying complex problems in surface processes, at sites across North America.

About 90% of past students with MS Geology degrees from NAU are employed in the areas of environmental and engineering consulting industry, energy industry, teaching and other related jobs, and federal and state agencies. The MS in Geology offers the opportunity to research sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, along with stratigraphy, structure, volcanology, surficial processes, and water resources.

MS in Geology degree at Northern Arizona University. An advanced degree is especially useful in state survey work and for advancement in industry and government. If you're passionate about the improvement of natural resources, the environment, and pollution control, we offer the tools to help you find a job while pursuing your passion. Our program is located in a region that offers amazing opportunities for geologic studies. Located in Flagstaff, Arizona, the university lies in the unparalleled setting of the southern Colorado Plateau near the San Francisco Peaks, Grand Canyon, and red rocks of Sedona. Research problems abound involving sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, surficial deposits, and water resources. Active and funded research programs also address problems outside Arizona, including studies in Alaska, Argentina, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, and Turkey.
