About the course
The department offers programs leading to the MS and PhD degrees in geography, which include four areas of concentration: 1) Earth system science, 2) Environment and natural resources, 3) Environment and society, and 4) Geographical information science. Study in geography prepares students to work in a broad range of positions related to land-use and natural resources management, planning, urban and economic development, environmental analysis, and geographic information techniques, including computer cartography, geographic information systems, and remote sensing. These positions are found in federal, state, and local governments, as well as in private industry and in academic institutions.
Our faculty and students have ongoing research to understand ecological and earth surface processes to improve the ways in which natural resources are managed. How to apply
Entry requirements for University of Alabama
Recommendations for acceptance and assistantships are based on academic records, the GRE, experience, statement of purpose, and references. A BA/BS in geography, environmental science, or a related discipline is normally required for admission into the MS and PhD programs. Admission also requires a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in previous coursework and a minimum combined score of 300 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. Under exceptional circumstances, admission may be considered if a student satisfies only one of the two scoring criteria, but has notable experiences and outstanding recommendations.
Submit official scores from the Graduate Record Examination to the Graduate School.
Request at least three letters of recommendation in support of your application.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 550 on the paper-based TOEFL or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The minimum score for admission to a degree program or for non-degree admission is 6.5.
