About the course

A student in the M.S. degree program will be knowledgeable about the field of food science in general. This knowledge will be acquired primarily through satisfactory completion of required coursework. Additionally, our students will develop the ability to learn independently by determining, finding, and using necessary resources. Our students will also develop the ability to make decisions and judgments based on their knowledge. Furthermore, the student will be capable of addressing a research problem through a series of sustained, logical experiments and bring his or her work to a satisfactory conclusion in the form of a M.S. thesis. Finally, it is expected that the thesis research will be of publishable quality and, as a minimum, will be communicated through at least one oral presentation or poster session at a scientific meeting. How to apply

Entry requirements for Pennsylvania State University - University Park

For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold a degree from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates. Degree must be a:

　　Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or

　　Tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.

　　Statement of purpose for graduate study (1-3 pages double-spaced)

　　Article-length (15-20 pages double-spaced) critical writing sample

　　an unofficial transcript (this is NOT a copy printed from the institution's website) from each institution of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate. Note: Official transcripts will only be required by the Graduate School upon admission to the program.

　　Results from a recent Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test. Penn State’s institution code is 2660 and the department code for English is 2501. Penn State doesn't require the subject portion of the graduate Record Examination (GRE) test.

　　All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, with Graduate School approval, which requires an institutional test of English proficiency upon the first semester of enrollment and, if necessary, remedial course work. The minimum composite score for the IELTS is 6.5.
