About the course
The School of Economics provides an MA and an MS in Economics. Students enrolling in the graduate programs in Economics (MS or MA) focus their studies on advanced microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, and econometrics, with research strengths in applied economics and quantitative methods. Graduates from both programs acquire strong analytical, quantitative, and communication skills, which prepare them for Ph.D. programs in Economics and related fields and employment with government agencies, consulting firms, businesses, and non-profit organizations. The main difference between the two programs is the M.S. provides advanced technical and quantitative training, while the M.A. provides the opportunity for exploring more electives. Both degrees offer thesis and non-thesis options and prepare students for positions requiring advanced analytical skills, knowledge of economic systems and methods, and practical experience conducting economic analyses of policy issues. Our Master?s of Science (MS) in Economics program is well-suited for students who want to prepare for a career where advanced and quantitatively rigorous economics training is required or beneficial but a Ph.D. is not required, or who want to prepare for a Ph.D. program. We emphasize econometric training more than similar programs at other universities. Strong quantitative skills and mastery of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory are becoming common requirements for current economics employment opportunities and Ph.D. programs. UMaine?s teaching and research strengths in economic theory and quantitative methods are well suited to helping students excel at these requirements. In fact, we hear regular feedback from employers on how well-prepared our MS students are for the rigors of quantitative analysis in government and industry.
