About the course
The Department of Scripps Institution of Oceanography offers instruction leading to Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in oceanography, marine biology, and earth sciences. The M.S. degree is for those who have an interest in studying a specific area of marine science. The M.S. program consists of at least 36 units, culminating in a master's thesis. The 36 total units includes 24 units of coursework and 12 units of independent research. Students typically complete the program in one-and-a-half to two years and should expect to fund themselves for the duration of their program. Climate Sciences concerns the study of the climate system of the earth with emphasis on the physical, dynamical, and chemical interactions of the atmosphere, ocean, land, ice, and the terrestrial and marine biospheres. Climate Sciences encompasses changes on seasonal to interannual time scales and those induced by human activities, as well as paleoclimatic changes on time scales from centuries to millions of years. Demonstrated proficiency in the English language is required for all international applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied full-time for one uninterrupted academic year at a university-level institution in which English is the language of instruction and in a country in which English is a dominant language.
The minimum IELTS score is Band 7.0
The minimum TOEFL score for admission is 85 for the Internet Based Test and 64 for the Paper Based Test.
Successful applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or from a recognized university-level academic institution abroad and at least a B average (3.0 GPA) or its equivalent by the time they enroll.
