About the course

The Master of Science degree in Data Science is designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary blend of statistics, computer science, and computational science and mathematics which provides the necessary training to assimilate, process, analyze, and interpret data from diverse sources. Michigan State University's MS degree in Data Science (MSDS) is a new cross-disciplinary, cutting-edge professional MS degree program shared by the College of Engineering and the College of Natural Science. It is a collaboration among three departments: the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (CMSE), the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and the Department of Statistics and Probability (STT).

　　The MSDS prepares professional students for the demands of tomorrow's workplace in data-driven decision making. Data science is an emerging interdisciplinary field whose purpose is the extraction of actionable insights from data. It employs theories and techniques from the core areas of statistics, computational mathematics, computer science, and information science. Our MSDS provides high-quality training in state-of-the-art data analysis and computational methods. We include coverage of the principles which underlie data science, encouraging students to understand not simply how to implement existing methods, but also why they work, when to use them appropriately, and when and how to develop novel methods tailored to new situations in any industry. How to apply

Entry requirements for Michigan State University

a 2-page letter of motivation (combined personal statement and academic statement, please do not submit two separate letters),

　　a detailed CV/resume including all relevant industrial experience if applicable,

　　full official transcripts from undergraduate and/or graduate institutions, sent by the granting institutions (unofficial copies can be uploaded by the applicant),

　　a minimum of three letters of recommendation sent directly by the recommenders (not attached to the application),

　　International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A minimum average score of 6.5 is required, with no subscore below 6.0.

　　Internet-based test (iBT): no subscore below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking, no writing subscore below 22, with a minimum average score of 80
