About the course
The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering awards the Master of Science in civil engineering, the Master of Science in environmental engineering, the Master of Engineering in civil engineering, and the Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering. A Master of Science degree in environmental sciences and engineering are also administered within the department. The department has 48 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 21 emeritus faculty members, many of whom actively engaged with the department. Additionally, the department has 26 other faculty members which includes professors of practice, research faculty and administrative faculty. The department also is supported by 18 staff members. Three faculty are members of the National Academy of Engineering, one is a member of the National Academy of Science, two are members of the National Academy of Construction, and ten hold prestigious named professorships. Fifteen members of the faculty have been awarded Presidential Young Investigator, National Young Investigator, or CAREER awards from the National Science Foundation. Two have been awarded the prestigious PECASE Award and seven have been awarded the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award. Entry requirements for Virginia Tech
Minimum GPA-3
Admission for graduate study in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech is granted by the Graduate School, upon recommendation of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department through a departmental review committee and/or the Department Head. Admission normally requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
For a regular student status, a student with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) for the last 60 semester hours may be granted regular admission status.

General GRE- All applicants must provide a GRE score.
All international applicants must provide a TOEFL score. Our departmental minimum is 90 (internet-based). Further, TOEFL scores of 20 or greater in Listening, Writing, Speaking, and Reading subsections are required.
IELTS may be substituted for the TOEFL only if it is above 6.5
