About the course

The Department offers courses of study leading to the degrees of M.S. and Ph.D. in chemistry. We approach our graduate education using a very interdisciplinary approach that prepares graduates to be independent researchers, provides them with an education with both breadth and depth in training in chemistry, and just as importantly, and focuses on the development of good communication skills.

In collaboration with the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry offers a chemical physics option as part of the chemistry Ph.D. program. Cross-disciplinary training is promoted through continued collaborations with The Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science, Institute for Biomedical Engineering Research, Center for Environmental Studies, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and the Integrated Bioscience program.

Chemistry at The University of Akron is one of the leading graduate degree programs at the University of Akron and we collaborate ly with other departments including Polymer Science, Engineering, and Biology. The graduate program typically enrolls approximately 40-60 graduate students, as well as postdoctoral and other visiting scientists, from around the country and the world. Our faculty consists of 13 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and many adjunct faculty from other departments and from off-campus contribute significantly to graduate level activities.

The department offers courses of study leading to the degree of Ph.D. in chemistry and also offers a M.S. with Thesis Option as well as M.S. Non-Thesis Option. Our graduate education strives to prepare students to be independent researcher and exposes them to advanced instrumentation and coursework that strengthens communication skills.
