About the course

The Master of Science in Biology program at UMSL provides the research-oriented training and education necessary for candidates to succeed in a number of areas. These include being professional biologists qualified for technical positions in business and industry, entering doctoral programs in biology and becoming effective secondary school and junior college biology teachers.

  UMSL?s Department of Biology offers three ways to earn the MS in Biology.

  A 30-credit hour, non-thesis option suitable for those who already have extensive research experience, educators who seek to upgrade their academic skills but do not require research experience, or those who need to broaden their biological background.

  A 32-credit-hour Emphasis in Professional Science option that includes a strong business component for those interested in learning more about the business of biology.

  A 30-credit-hour traditional apprenticeship in research leading to a written thesis. Both thesis and non-thesis options may be developed into a final degree program in either Cell and Molecular Biology or Ecology, Evolution and Systematics.

  The Department of Biology offers three ways of achieving the Master of Science degree. The first is a 30 credit hour non-thesis option suitable for those who may already have extensive research experience, for educators who seek to upgrade their academic skills but do not require research experience, or for those who need to broaden their biological background. The second is a 32 credit hour Professional Science track that includes a strong business component for students who are interested in learning more about the business aspects of companies. This track may not be appropriate for students who are interested in pursuing a PhD or working primarily as laboratory scientists. The third is a 30 credit hour traditional apprenticeship in research leading to a written thesis. All students admitted to the graduate program are considered to be in the non-thesis program unless they have been accepted into an individual faculty lab. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Missouri - St. Louis

Admission normally requires a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (both biology and overall), as well as an appropriate background for graduate work in biology, including courses in genetics, biochemistry, evolution, organic chemistry, college physics, and calculus. Statistics is strongly recommended.

  All foreign applicants, except those from countries where English is the primary language, must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Examination. The minimal TOEFL score is 550 (paper based test), or 213 (computer based test), or 80 (internet based test). The University requires all incoming foreign students to take an English language exam during orientation week and may require additional courses in English during the first year of graduate study.
