About the course

Colorado State University offers an outstanding program in graduate conducting, with instrumental and choral specializations, undergraduate conducting courses are also available. CSU provides a nationally-renowned conducting faculty, superb facilities designed for conducting instruction, and high quality ensembles for laboratory experiences. CSU offers a Master of Music, Choral Conducting Specialization and Master of Music, Instrumental Conducting Specialization. Graduate students take rigorous academic coursework, participate in weekly lessons with their principal teachers, and receive opportunities to conduct the school's major ensembles. Advanced conducting courses are taught by James Kim (choral), Wes Kenney (orchestral), and Rebecca Phillips (band). Opportunities exist for graduate conductors to conduct repertoire from symphonic, operatic, and theatrical repertoire. In addition, the curriculum includes developing a score preparation system, Laban method of movement, and rehearsal techniques. The school is well-located to take advantage of a multitude of musical enrichment opportunities in the region. Graduate students in conducting are eligible for several teaching assistantships, which provide an opportunity for direct supervision of choral and instrumental ensembles in the department, as well as the chance to assist in the direction of all the major ensembles at CSU, including the choirs, bands, orchestras, opera, jazz bands, marching band, and pep bands. How to apply

Entry requirements for Colorado State University

Official transcripts or mark sheets and any certificates, diplomas, or degrees from each college or university attended is required regardless of the length of attendance, including courses in progress.

  A minimum of three (3) letters of recommendation are required from previous instructors or employers who are able to comment on your abilities and potential for graduate study.

  TOEFL score for admission without condition is 550 (paper based), or 80 (internet based). IELTS score for admission without condition is 6.5.

  Applicants electing the performance or conducting options must audition in person for area faculty.

  Applicants electing music education, music education with Kodály emphasis, or music therapy may audition in person or submit a recording.

  the School will be in contact once we receive your complete application to schedule an audition.

  The Graduate Record Exam test is not required for entrance into the University or Music Program.

  Diagnostic exams in music theory and music history are required of all incoming graduate students, except those pursuing music therapy. The purpose of the diagnostic examinations is to determine whether students are prepared to undertake history and theory courses at the graduate (500+) level. On the basis of these examinations, MU334, MU335, and/or MU412 may be required as prerequisites for 500 level courses in music history and music theory.These examinations are critically important. Diligent preparation and review can significantly improve your performance on them. Study guides for both exams are posted on this page. If you are required to take remedial courses, they will provide a valuable opportunity to enhance your knowledge and sharpen your skills. The diagnostic examinations may be repeated once.

  Note: Students who do not take exams and/or who fail an exam or exams a second time, will automatically enrolled in the appropriate remedial courses in music history and music theory.
