About the course

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in art with a concentration in Jewelry Design & Metalsmithing (Metals) is structured to give a strong technical foundation in metals and yet allows sufficient flexibility for students to explore personal directions in their work throughout their tenure at Texas Tech University. A graduate seminar is scheduled once a week throughout the semester for group critiques, slide lectures, technical demonstrations, and discussions of required readings or research materials. In addition, individual critiques are scheduled on a weekly basis or as needed. Students are encouraged to draw from their background, interests, observations, and environment as a basis for developing distinct and personal statements in metal. Generally, the direction of each student's research is determined by the student in consultation with the faculty advisor and the MFA Advisory Committee. To complete the requirements for the MFA degree the student is required to write a report, pass an oral review, and have a public exhibition of thesis work. The faculty member's role is to provide the guidance, expertise, and judgment needed in helping students achieve their artistic goals and to realize their full potential as artists. How to apply

Entry requirements for Texas Tech University

Admission to the M.F.A. program normally presumes that students hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio art. A graduate preview committee, composed of three graduate faculty members in the school, will examine a portfolio of the student's work and hold a personal interview, if feasible, with each student who meets the minimum entrance requirements of the Graduate School. On the basis of these examinations, the preview committee will make recommendations concerning acceptance to the M.F.A. program and will determine and prescribe any leveling work to be completed before or after acceptance. Students applying for the Master of Fine Arts degree program do not need to submit scores for the Graduate Record Examination.

　　For international applicants, proof of English proficiency which meets the minimum required score for Texas Tech University

　　79 (internet-based version). The TOEFL score must be received directly from the Educational Testing Service , International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) – The minimum IELTS required score is an overall band score of 6.5 on the Academic version. TOEFL score of at least 213 (computer) or 550 (written) for students for whom English is a foreign language.
