About the course

The MFA is a terminal degree in studio art. Its primary emphasis is on the creative aspects of an individual?s work. The program requires three years of intensive study and research beyond the bachelor?s degree (48 hours coursework & 12 hours dissertation). Although the formal requirements for the degree are in some respects comparable to doctoral degrees in other fields, the scope and objectives of the MFA are uniquely different. As such, the MFA degree represents strong creative attainment in studio art, an assured grasp of an area of concentration, a sound knowledge of critical and historical artistic thought, and demonstrated expertise in conceiving and executing a significant body of creative work.

　　Printmaking has provided the historical frame through which all artistic media are referenced and disseminated, in addition to being a distinctive art form in its own right. The UNM Printmaking Area offers instructions in various print mediums ? including Intaglio, Lithography, Monotype, Relief, Serigraphy, and Digital Processes. Besides traditional Printmaking, students are also challenging the medium?s role in the larger context of contemporary art through interdisciplinary concerns and innovation. Unique to UNM is the Collaborative Lithography course taught in partnership with the world-renowned Tamarind Institute of Lithography. During this course, printer trainees at Tamarind collaborate with UNM students to print multiple lithographic editions. In addition, the Printmaking Area has offered annual community outreach projects and has collaborated with many different groups, including public schools and non-profit, social welfare organizations, both nationally and internationally. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of New Mexico

A prospective student in the graduate studio program must have completed an undergraduate degree including 42 credit hours in studio courses and 18 credit hours in art history. Any deficiencies in the required preparation must be removed during the first year of coursework for the degree.

　　ALL application materials must be submitted to the Department Graduate Office by the January 15th deadline. Incomplete or late application packets will not be processed. The GRE is not required for admission.
