About the course
The faculty strongly urge that entering students come prepared to read at least one foreign language, preferably German, French, or Italian, other languages must be approved by the faculty. Students must pass a language exam administered by the division, in German, French, or Italian before the student can be awarded a master’s degree. For the student selecting an emphasis in ethnomusicology, a language appropriate to the research specialization will be acceptable, if it is available for study and testing at the University of Minnesota. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a major emphasis in one of the following areas of music: musicology/ethnomusicology, theory and/or composition, performance, or music therapy.
TOEFL iBT - 79 total score (Writing subscore of 21 and Reading subscore of 19) (Test date within 2 years of program start)
IELTS - 6.5 total score (Writing subscore of 6.5 and Reading subscore of 6.5) (Test date within 2 years of program start)
