About the course

Ethnomusicology faculty at Pitt study and teach courses on some of the most exciting and timely areas of music research today including: (1) global popular music, (2) music, labor, and value, (3) gender and sexuality, (4) media and technology, (5) sound studies, (6) cultural rights and advocacy, and (7) sound archives and repatriation. Our aim is to prepare students to become educators in the field of ethnomusicology and active in the public sector. Evidence of success is our strong record of graduate placement at universities both within and outside the U.S. In addition, our alumni hold advocacy positions in educational, government, and nonprofit organizations. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Pittsburgh

Application form and $50 application fee.

  Statement of purpose, an essay of about two pages that describes the applicant's academic background and professional goals.

  Undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all higher education institutions attended. These should be scanned and included with online application. Students will be required to forward official transcripts/translations at the time of matriculation (upon enrollment) to the Graduate School to clear transcript contingencies.

  CV or Resumé.

  Three letters of recommendation, preferably by persons who have taught the applicant in subjects related to the four research subdisciplines, rather than in performance lessons.

  GREs are no longer required by the Department of Music .

  Samples of work.

  A minimum TOEFL score of 90 (with at least a score of 22 in all of the four sections of speaking, listening, reading and writing) is required. The required minimum IELTS score is 7.0 (with at least 6.5 in each of its four sections).
