Master of Arts in English with TESOL Certificate

About the course

This program leads to an M.A. in English with a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). In addition to the basic requirements for the M.A. listed below, this program requires additional coursework in TESOL. The program offers tracks that prepare students for one of two opportunities: A) instruction at post-secondary/adult levels, or B) technical communication in corporate/non-profit settings. Either program might prepare a student to pursue doctoral work in applied linguistics or other areas of English Studies. Specific decisions should be reached in consultation with the Director of English Graduate Studies. The program requires 12 courses (36 hours) for completion, 6 of which (18 hours) will be in literature. You will need to complete either a Capstone Project or a Thesis. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Alabama in Huntsville

To be considered for unconditional admission to the program, you must have:

3.0 GPA for previous college-level work

or at least a 3.5 GPA in all coursework in an English major or minor

We require a statement of purpose on the application, please pay attention to the word/character count restrictions, as the Director of English Graduate Studies only receives that count to evaluate.

We do not generally require the general or subject-area G.R.E., letters of recommendation, or writing samples, although some of those materials are necessary or helpful if you are applying for financial support. (Do be aware that students who have not taken the MAT or GRE cannot be considered for the Matrix Fellowship program.)

If you have a B.A. in English, you can generally be admitted to the program without needing prerequisite coursework, provided you meet the other entry requirements.

If you are applying to a Teacher Certification program, please see the additional requirements for those programs.

If your B.A. is in a different field, we like to see essentially the equivalent of an undergraduate Minor in English (21 hours beyond freshman writing, 15 hours upper division), with solid performance in upper-division English coursework. If your background is different from this model, we will work together to determine the best way for you to be successful as a graduate student, which may mean requiring pre-requisite or co-requisite undergraduate English coursework.

In addition to the requirements for any applicant to our programs, the College of Education has specific requirements for teacher candidates. Because such requirements do shift regularly (and are outside UAH?s control), students are advised to confirm with the Education Program that they meet the current requirements. However, at this time, students admitted to any of the programs that include teacher certification must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.5. Such students have additional requirements as follows:

If you have a B.A. in English, you will still need to have met other distribution requirements, meaning you should have graduate or undergraduate coursework in at least two other areas: Journalism, Media, and/or Theatre. Such courses can be taken at UAH alongside your M.A. program if they were not part of your original B.A. degree. You may wish to have the Director of Graduate School look at an unofficial version of your transcript for the B.A. to identify which courses might still be lacking.

In order to be considered for admission to degree programs with no additional English language training required, applicants must meet the following minimums

  on the TOEFL or IELTS.

  TOEFL (iBT): all sub-scores ? 18 OR

  IELTS: all sub-scores ? 6.0

Have a minimum grade-point average of B (3.0) on the undergraduate record
