About the course
Media studies at NIU offers a diverse range of coursework emphasizing critical, theoretical and production methods at the graduate level. Typical seminars in the curriculum examine the documentary tradition, film history and theory, narrative scriptwriting, gender in film and television, computer-mediated communication and documentary production.
The Master of Arts degree in communication studies is for students who wish to build upon their knowledge and leadership skills in communication theory, media studies, rhetorical studies and journalism. Students can focus on one of these interests or create an individualized program that encompasses more than one. A student may pursue the primary portion of graduate study for the M.A. in communication studies in interpersonal, organizational, and persuasive communication, rhetorical studies, journalism, or media studies. How to apply
Entry requirements for Northern Illinois University
An applicant whose native language is not English must present an IELTS score of 6.5 or alternatively, a TOEFL score of at least 80 on the TOELF ibt, Normally, to be considered for admission, a non-U.S. citizen shall have completed a four-year undergraduate degree. A minimum 2.75 overall gradepoint average (GPA), based on a 4.00 system, in their baccalaureate program or must have completed 15 or more semester hoursof graduate work at an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.20 or higher.
In addition to the application, the following materials need to be submitted to the Graduate School.
At least two letters of recommendation (letters from professors are preferred).
Transcripts.
Statement of Purpose.
GRE Scores: Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher should contact the graduate director to request a GRE waiver.
The TOEFL and the Test of Spoken English are required for international students.
