About the course
One of the first programs to be developed in the United States and receive approval from the American Art Therapy Association, GW?s art therapy program combines artistic training with therapy and counseling skills. A part of Columbian College of Arts and Sciences? social and behavioral sciences program, students are trained to become effective art therapists through a combination of coursework, hands-on projects and placements in internships for course credit. Studies include training in drawing, painting and sculpture, as well as intensive course work in the types of art therapy, diagnosis, and assessment. The Master?s of Art Therapy is 61 credits with 900 internship hours (400 direct client contact) required for graduation, which provides maximum educational credit received toward credentialing as a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) with the Art Therapy Credentialing Board (BC) and the coursework required for art therapy and counseling state licensure (please check individual state licensure boards to determine specific requirements for each state).
