About the course
This MA Fine Art course enables you to develop your individual practices in a supportive and critically engaged studio environment. Over 12 months you will produce a body of self-initiated work, supported by in-depth research in the fields and contexts that inform your practice. Through this process you will consolidate your own artistic position, learning to articulate your central concerns and to locate your work in relation to the key theoretical, cultural, and political debates of the 21st century. You will have your own dedicated studio space in which to experiment with new materials and techniques, to expand the range of your creative practice, to hone existing skills, and embark on new collaborations. This fine art masters attracts students from across the world, providing a uniquely international mix and enabling a multicultural perspective to emerge during seminars. Entry requirements for University of Southampton
MA Fine Art at Winchester School of Art is both practice and theory based. It is important that you demonstrate your artistic ability in a portfolio, as this will be the determining factor for entry. Your portfolio should include evidence of independent research in art practice and in thinking, evidence of your knowledge and understanding of the broader contemporary art context, and examples of the development process you use to create your work in whatever medium or media that may be – stills or video (10 minutes, maximum, compressed video please). Please indicate scale, date and materials used in your work. Your portfolio should not exceed ten megabytes in size.
A 2.2 at degree level or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University or experience is desirable.
If you have professional experience, or credit through prior learning at another institution, you may be eligible to use this experience against some of the programme requirements for period of study. You will need to present evidence that you have met the learning outcomes of the programme. Full details can be found in the University’s Policy on the Recognition of Prior Learning .
International and EU students applying for the MA Fine Art Pathway are required to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component or equivalent, prior to starting the programme.
