About the course

Combine specialist study, theoretical inquiry and interdisciplinary investigations to explore literature, culture and history.

  On this course, you’ll have the opportunity to pursue innovative work as you shape your course to your particular interests. This can include a focus on a specific period or concept, or engaging with ideas across a wide historical range.

  Our faculty research expertise spans the medieval to the modern and contemporary periods.The diverse research interests in the Department of English mean that you’ve got expert support in the topics you choose to focus on. Our particular strengths lie in:

  querying the materiality and the body

  ecology and political economy

  philosophical approaches to literature

  decolonisation and radical politics

  novel theory

  poetics and experimental writing.

How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Sussex

You should normally have an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above.

  Your qualification should normally be in a subject relevant to your chosen Masters course. You may also be considered for the course if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.

  IELTS (Academic) - Higher level (7.0 overall, including at least 6.5 in each component). TOEFL (iBT) - 95 overall, including at least 22 in Listening, 23 in Reading, 23 in Speaking, 24 in Writing.
