Juris Doctor and Master of Science in Environmental Studies

About the course

Because the world of environmental law is inherently interdisciplinary, the environmental lawyer of the 21st century will benefit from an education that reaches beyond the bounds of traditional law school. Environmental legal problems invariably involve scientific, policy or ethical issues, and The University of Montana-Missoula is uniquely qualified to bridge the legal, social and physical sciences. We have combined a strong environmental and natural resources law curriculum with an established graduate program in environmental studies to provide the Joint Program in Law and Environmental Studies. Students completing the Joint Program in Law and Environmental Studies will receive two degrees: the Juris Doctor and the Masters of Science in Environmental Studies.

The Environmental Studies Program (EVST) was established as an interdisciplinary graduate program at UM in 1970. The EVST Program allows students to select an area of focus that may range from policy to hard science. Students, with their academic advisers, design their own programs of study, choosing from courses throughout the University. Scholarships - View all scholarships Internships

How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Montana

Request official transcripts from every college, university, or trade school you have attended mailed to the EVST office at address below. Some universities can send official transcripts electronically, and if so, that is also acceptable.

GRE - Environmental Studies requires verbal, quantitative and analytical writing scores. Subject tests are not required. Use the University of Montana institution code 4489 to indicate that you would like your score sent to UM. The University of Montana receives all GRE score reports electronically so a department code is no longer needed. If you took the test prior to spring 2003, we will accept an official paper copy of your score report. Applicants to the joint Environmental Studies/Law program may submit a LSAT score in lieu of a GRE score. We recommend taking the GRE by December 1st so that UM will officially receive your score by our January 15th priority application deadline.

TOEFL - Applicants who are graduates of English-speaking universities are not required to take the TOEFL, IELTS or MELAB, however, all applicants must submit scores for the GRE. Applicants whose native language is not English and did not attend an English-speaking university, must submit TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) scores. If the TOEFL score is below 580 (paper-based test), 237 (computer-based test) or 92 (internet-based test), the IELTS score is below 7.0 or the MELAB score is below 82, applicants may be admitted provisionally or as a graduate non-degree student and be required to complete English as a Second Language course(s) before they can take courses in Environmental Studies.
