About the course

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program at Long Island University, College of Veterinary Medicine, is 4 years long, organized into 2 academics semesters per calendar year, and thus the program consists of a total of 8 semesters.

　　The pre-clinical portion of the DVM program encompasses Years 1-3 and the clinical program consists of one academic year of a series of clerkships (rotations) each 2-4 weeks in length.

　　The first year of the DVM program emphasizes structure and function, animal handling and restraint, and building clinical skills. The learning environment includes didactic teaching, on campus laboratory sessions, and experiential learning at partner institutions. In the second semester students learn general pathology and parasitology, and are encouraged to integrate acquired basic science knowledge and skills required to practice veterinary medicine.

　　The second year of the DVM program emphasizes morphological and physiological manifestations of disease focusing on infectious diseases. The learning environments include didactic teaching, on campus laboratory sessions, and experiential learning at partner institutions. Students continue developing professional and clinical skills and are engaged in activities that promote integration of basic and clinical sciences.

　　The third year of the DVM program emphasizes clinical medicine focusing on clinical signs, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and treatment of common diseases of domestic animals.

　　The fourth year of the DVM program provides supervised opportunities for students to enhance professional and clinical skills. Students will experience clinical rotations at a variety of hospitals and other veterinary facilities with which the College will establish relationships. How to apply

Entry requirements for Long Island University - Brooklyn

1. Completion of at least 60 credits of full time postsecondary education at a recognized university, or at a college providing university-equivalent courses.

　　2. Preference will be given to applicants that have completed a baccalaureate degree with a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. Minimum overall GPA is set at 2.8

　　3. Preference will be given to applicants with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the following pre-requisite courses

　　English language proficiency must be demonstrated by all applicants for whom English is their second language. English proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following:

　　A minimum score of 85 on the internet based TOEFL, with a minimum score of 50 on the Test of Spoken English and a minimum listening score of 22, 225 on the Computer-based or 550 Paper-based

　　A minimum ILTS score of 7

　　A minimum Cambridge English advanced and proficiency overall score of 185

　　A minimum Pearson Test of English (PTE) of 67

　　Submitting an ELS 112 completion certificate will satisfy the language proficiency requirement and no TOEFL/IELTS/PTE will be required.
