Doctor of Philosophy - Statistics

About the course

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree involves original and sustained research, mentored by an academic supervisor. It’s an opportunity to make new discoveries, address some of the big issues of our time, challenge yourself, and develop a mix of transferable and specialised skills. Take a deep dive into statistical theory and its practical applications. As information technology lets more and more people gather and analyse more and more data, your expertise in this area will open up new opportunities. You'll master the statistical techniques that will let you work in many fields, including biology, medicine, the social sciences, engineering, physics, business, finance and economics. Take advantage of Victoria's links with the many government departments, research institutes and businesses based in the capital. Staff and students are involved in research collaborations with organisations including Statistics New Zealand, the Department of Conservation, Contact Energy, GNS Science and the Accident Compensation Corporation. This gives you the chance to build your professional networks and to apply your learning to real-world data. The insights you provide can help make New Zealand and the world a better place.
