About the course

The PhD in Special Education will prepare you to assume academic faculty positions at the university level. The program is geared toward improving the educational and related service programs for children and youth with disabilities. Special education PhD students will be mentored by Special Education faculty who will support them throughout their academic career. Students will have many opportunities to collaborate within and between programs to pursue special education topics of interest. Each student will have mentored opportunities to demonstrate all of the skills required by university level faculty which include: synthesizing current literature, submitting peer-reviewed manuscripts and grants, reviewing submissions for publication, teaching university level classes, conceiving and conducting research projects in authentic environments, and presenting at national conferences. As a PhD student, you will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, mentor graduate students, developing a research agenda that will result in funded and published research, and translating research outcomes for the improvement of educational and related service programs for children and youth with disabilities. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Pittsburgh

Master's degree in a Special Education related area

  3 years teaching children with disabilities or similar experience

  Applications are submitted through the Pitt Education Online Application Form

  There is a non-refundable application fee of $50 (USD) to be paid by credit card

  Your online application must include (a.) a Purpose Statement of your career goals and degree objectives that is two-to-three pages double-spaced in length, (b.) your resume or curriculum vita, and (c.) contact information for three academic or professional contacts to later be invited to provide letters of recommendation.

  Official transcripts from every institution previously attended can be sent to us electronically at [email protected] or mailed to us at School of Education Admissions and Enrollment Services,

  Your scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required. The GRE institution code for the University of Pittsburgh is R2927 and the Department Code for Education is 3999.

  Submission of a professional writing sample in the form of a previously completed term paper, master's thesis, article, etc. that does not exceed 20 pages in length. The paper can be uploaded as part of your online application.

  A narrative statement of 750-1,250 words that explains the following:

  The applicant’s specific area of research interest

  The alignment of research interests with at least 1 or 2 School of Education faculty

  The supporting field outside of education that the applicant plans to include as part of the degree program

  ETS for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 on the written test, 213 on the computer-based test, and 80 on the internet-based test

  International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) band score of 6.5
