About the course
Activities span from molecular materials organic and inorganic semiconductors, wide bandgap semiconductors, point defects, rare earth doping, and ferroelectrics. Exciton dynamics in molecular crystals and organic semiconductors, including singlet exciton fission and triplet exciton fusion, is studied via pump and probe spectroscopy and fluorescence dynamics (Biaggio). Other techniques include nonlinear optical spectroscopy (Biaggio) and infrared optical spectroscopy under application of hydrostatic pressure, and magnetic fields (Stavola). Point defects in insulating materials with ferroelectric domain walls and other dopants, excitation processes of rare earth in wide band gap semiconductors, formation dynamics of single crystals in glass (Dierolf). For Defects in semiconductors, current interest is in defect complexes that contain light- element impurities such as H, C, O, and N, where vibrational spectroscopy and uniaxial stress techniques are used to elucidate microscopic properties (Stavola, Fowler). Other topics include Raman and neutron scattering, dielectric and ultrasonic spectroscopies, collective vibrational dynamics of disordered ferroelectrics and glasses (Toulouse). How to apply
Entry requirements for Lehigh University
Students with a bachelor's degree in physics from an established college or university normally are prepared to begin graduate studies in physics at Lehigh and are encouraged to apply. Students with degrees in related areas will also be considered, their graduate programs will be designed to make up for possible deficiencies in physics or mathematics preparation. This page provides information for those who wish to complete the application process.
have an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75,
have an average of at least 3.00 for the last two semesters of undergraduate study,
have scores at or above the 75th percentile on the GRE or other recognized test,
have a graduate GPA of at least 3.00 on a minimum of twelve hours of graduate work at other institutions, or
have successfully completed the probationary conditions as an associate student.
International applicants are required to take the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). If you have done undergraduate or graduate studies in the United States or another English speaking country during the past two years, you are not required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. The minimum scores required on the iBT TOEFL for admittance into the College of Arts & Sciences are Writing = 25, Speaking = 24, Reading = 21, Listening = 15, with a composite score of 85. The minimum scores required on the IELTS for admittance into the College of Arts & Sciences are Writing = 6.5, Speaking = 7.5, Reading = 6.5, Listening = 6.0, with a composite score of 6.5.
