About the course

The UCR Department of Physics and Astronomy expects to offer a PhD program in Astronomy starting Fall 2023. The degree is designed to provide a broad background in observational, theoretical, and computational astrophysics through a combination of courses and research.

  Courses will include a set of core courses taken in the first year, followed by electives (see below). The program emphasizes an early start to research, with students will beginning research project at least as early as the Winter quarter of their first year. It is expected that students in the PhD program will be associated with a thesis research advisor by the end of the spring quarter of their first year. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of California

To be admitted to graduate status, the basic requirement is a bachelor's degree in Physics or its equivalent from an accredited institution. This degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent both in the distribution of academic subject matter and scholarship achievement comparable to that offered at the University of California. Qualified applicants are expected to have a junior/senior GPA of 3.25 or higher. Majors other than physics may also be considered. These will be treated on a case-by-case basis. Scores from both the General and Physics GRE examinations are required for the awarding of financial aid such as Fellowships and Teaching Assistantship. Qualified applicants are expected to have a combined (verbal+quantitative) General GRE score of 300 or higher. Applicants should arrange for 3 letters of reference to be submitted directly to the Graduate Admissions in the Dept. of Physics. Qualified applicants should have a minimum score of either 550 from the paper-based test or 80 from the internet based test (iBT). Ranges 540-550 / 75-80 may also be considered. Ielts - The minimum acceptable overall score is 7 with no score less than 6 on any individual component. Toefl 213 (computer based), All students are required to take the general GRE and Physics Subject GRE. No exceptions can be made.
