About the course
The graduate physics program is designed to give students an adequate background in the concepts and techniques of theoretical and experimental physics in preparation for careers at the most advanced level in research or teaching. The program is designed for the student who wants to become a professional physicist. It has two main components: Mastery of at least a core of advanced general physics. This component is intended to provide the students with the foundational knowledge enabling them to pursue a broad range of employment options upon graduation, including teaching physics at a four-year college level or higher, and/or conducting research in areas different than that of the thesis. Original research in a specific area of physics. The research component provides the student with an in-depth knowledge of a particular area of active physics research, along with significant research experience in that area culminating in production of a thesis based on original scientific findings.
Cornell accelerator physicists pursue a broad range of topics in accelerator science and technology, from the operation of the on-campus Cornell Electron Storage Ring, also known as CESR, to the construction of an innovative new x-ray lightsource and the design and construction of future high energy colliders.
In operation for over 25 years, CESR has been a world class collider for particle physics and is now used as a test accelerator for components of the planned 30km long International Linear Collider. The site of numerous innovations in accelerator technology, its presence on-campus provides a unique opportunity for students to ?drive? an accelerator, test their ideas and learn about nonlinear beam dynamics.
CESR is just one step in the long line of Cornell particle accelerators that have made Cornell a historically rich, technologically advanced, and internationally acclaimed laboratory for accelerator physics. The accelerator group is now developing an entirely new type of superconducting linear accelerator. This machine, known as an ERL (for Energy Recovery Linear accelerator), features x-ray beam brightness orders of magnitude higher than what is obtained with synchrotron sources and can produce femtosecond x-ray pulses with unprecedented average intensities. Cornell physicists expect to build the full 1.3 km ERL at Cornell at the end of this decade. A prototype that is being commissioned, tests critical components and offers opportunities for pioneering research in the physics and technology of beams. Entry requirements for Cornell University
Most entering students have completed an undergraduate program in physics, including such courses as analytical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics and wave motion, electronics, and atomic physics, some advanced undergraduate laboratory work in physics is also expected. Knowledge of linear algebra, differential equations, and vector calculus is essential. Additional study in mathematics is desirable. The quality of undergraduate work and promise for graduate work are weighted more heavily than the extent of undergraduate study in physics and related subjects. Some entering students enroll in one or more undergraduate courses to make up deficiencies.
