About the course
The physics department offers both a non-thesis master?s degree and a doctoral degree that can prepare you for your personal educational and career goals. The MS program allows you the flexibility to tailor your degree to serve either as a springboard to a PhD program or as critical training for jobs in industry, with specializations in areas such as geosciences, engineering, polymer science, and data science. The PhD program is designed to train you for careers in academia or the private sector through coursework in foundational material (classical and quantum mechanics, statistical physics and electrodynamics) and a primary focus on original research supervised by faculty members. The UMass Physics Department hosts about 90 graduate students in our PhD program, with an average of about 15 students in each incoming class. Students entering the program with a typical undergraduate degree spend the bulk of their first 3 semesters completing coursework and working as a teaching assistant during the academic year, while starting to explore research. By semester 4, students engage primarily in research activities while attending seminars and taking the occasional special topics course. Students are also encouraged to make use of the many professional development opportunities available through both the department and the Graduate School's Office of Professional Development.
