About the course

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree requires a thorough understanding of the foundations of physics and mathematical methods as evidenced by performance on the written Preliminary Exam and the oral Qualifying Exam, as well as submission of a dissertation which must include an original contribution to fundamental physics. There is no foreign language requirement for the Ph.D. degree The UC Davis Department of Physics provides a dynamic and diverse environment for the training of graduate students. With our three core research areas of condensed matter, high energy physics, and cosmology and smaller programs in nuclear physics, high energy astrophysics, computational science and physics education, the opportunities for the motivated student are almost endless.
