Entry requirements for University of Kentucky

  Personal Statement

  ​Please submit a one-page statement (at least 150 words, 3 paragraphs suggested) expressing your motivation for seeking this degree from the University of Kentucky and how this degree fits into your goals for the future.

  Writing Sample

  ​At least one music paper of an analytical nature is required (two samples preferred). An undergraduate term paper is acceptable. The topic of the paper should deal with some aspect of form, harmony, or other organizational aspects of a piece of music. The paper should be at least 5 pages in length, 12-point font (Times or Times New Roman preferred), and should include bibliographical and footnote or endnote citations. We are interested in seeing your very best work.

  Audition and exam request form

  No GRE or GMAT is required for admission to this program.

  Three letters of recommendation

  Students seeking admission to the Graduate School must have obtained a baccalaureate degree, prior to the start of the term for which s/he is admitted, from a fully accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or from a recognized foreign institution.

  An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School. Individual departments may require higher grade point averages.

  Submission of scores on the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing portions of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) unless their chosen program indicates otherwise. The Graduate School has no minimum GRE score requirement, individual programs may set specific score requirements and in some cases may require the advanced portion of the GRE.

  International applicants whose native language is not English must submit either a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. The University of Kentucky requires a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based). For IELTS, a minimum mean band score of 6.5 is required. Schedule a School of Music Entrance Exam in music theory (aural and written) and music history. If you are seeking a performance degree you must also schedule an Audition. Auditions and Entrance Exams are offered on the same dates. You will be asked to upload copies of transcripts from all higher education institutions attended, Students seeking admission to the Graduate School must have obtained a baccalaureate degree, prior to the start of the term for which s/he is admitted, from a fully accredited U.S. institution of higher learning or from a recognized foreign institution, Many graduate programs also require letters of recommendation.
