About the course

The musicology area acknowledges its unique position among the rich cultures found in the Pacific region and seeks to embrace a robust and globalized perspective of the field. To this end, the degree of Master of Arts in Music, with musicology focus, is a comprehensive and current program that reflects the discipline’s historical position while engaging with new directions in the discipline at large.

  The musicology faculty are committed to exposing students to a variety of methodologies in historical musicology. Faculty expertise ranges from medieval music theory in Europe to American film music, affording students a foundation for studies from multiple perspectives. The musicology area strongly encourages a cross-examination of methods and approaches from the discipline of ethnomusicology, facilitated by the superb faculty and facilities in ethnomusicology at the Music Department. This multifaceted approach of the degree programs prepares students for a variety of subsequent pursuits, whether these be in service to a local community, academic work, or careers in the music industry. How to apply

Entry requirements for University of Hawaii - Manoa

A master’s degree in musicology or a minimum of four graduate seminars in musicology. A 7,500 word research paper in English on a subject in historical musicology.

  Applicants for admission to the PhD program must present:

  a master’s degree in music (in the area of emphasis) or equivalent,

  an excellent academic record,

  two copies of a transcript from each post secondary institution attended

  (official transcripts sent directly from the institution in a sealed institutional envelope must be submitted after the student is admitted, transcripts are not required for any coursework completed at any of the UH campuses since Graduate Admissions will obtain UH transcripts on behalf of applicants.),

  three confidential letters of recommendation (not more than two years old) on forms provided by the music department,

  a sample of academic writing proficiency such as a recent term paper, and

  for non-native speakers of English a TOEFL score of 560 or better.

  TOEFL score of 560(P), 220(C), or 83(I). At minimum, the applicant needs to demonstrate above average academic performance (B average, usually a 3.0 on a 1.0-4.0 scale) for undergraduate course work and for any post-baccalaureate or graduate course work.
