About the course

The theory program consists of a core curriculum devoted to the theory and analysis of tonal and 20th-century music, complemented by seminars in a wide variety of topics. The topics reflect musicological as well as theoretical interests. Graduate students may pursue advanced degrees in music scholarship and performance. We offer a Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Musicology, and Music Theory. In addition, we offer a Master of Music (MM) in Piano Accompanying, Woodwinds and Brass, Choral Conducting, Keyboard, Strings, and Voice. A Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) is offered in Choral Conducting, Keyboard, Strings, Horn, and Voice. A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is offered with optional emphases in European Medieval Studies and Feminist Studies. Graduate students work ly with faculty members in their specific area of expertise. The UCSB Music Department supports and encourages students who wish to do graduate-level work in both performance and academic areas. Students may either pursue multiple degree objectives, or combine high-level course work or performance opportunities with the degree program of their choice. Entry requirements for University of California - Santa Barbara

Statement of Purpose, Personal Achievements/Contributions, and Resume or CV (submitted in the online application)

  Three Letters of Recommendation (submitted in the online application)

  Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended (submitted in the online application)

  GRE General test scores (not required for MM applicants)

  TOEFL scores 550 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 80 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS Overall Band score of 7 or higher (if applicable)

  Writing Sample for those applying to ethnomusicology, theory, musicology, and all MM programs. May also be required for some DMA programs. Submit the writing sample in the online application if it is required for your emphasis. Please contact the Music Department graduate program office for detailed information.

  Live audition and/or pre-screen recording for those applying to MM or DMA degrees in Performance depending on emphasis. Please contact the Music Department graduate program office for detailed information. The DMA degree application requires a live audition.

  Final/Official transcripts will be required for all applicants who are admitted and have indicated their intent to enroll at UC Santa Barbara by submitting a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR). UC Santa Barbara reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admissions process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found.
